What do the upcoming SIL Registration Changes Mean for Support Coordinators?

With the pace of reform across the NDIS accelerating, there’s a lot for Support Coordinators to stay across right now. From the recent updated announced by the Federal Government in April 2026 to ongoing scheme changes, you’re not just keeping up with policy. You’re actively managing risk, continuity, and outcomes for the people you support.

One of the most significant upcoming changes is the introduction of mandatory registration for Supported Independent Living (SIL) providers from 1 July 2026.

You likely already know this change is coming. The real question now is: what does this mean for your participants, and what should you be doing next?

What’s changing?

From 1 July 2026, all providers delivering SIL supports must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

This means providers will need to:

  • Meet the NDIS Practice Standards
  • Successfully complete a formal audit process
  • Demonstrate strong quality, safeguarding, and compliance systems.

This reform is part of broader government efforts to strengthen oversight, improve participant safety, and ensure more consistent service delivery across the sector.

So, what does this mean for Support Coordinators?

This isn’t just a compliance update, it’s a sector-wide shift that will directly impact provider availability and participant continuity.

Right now, many Support Coordinators are:

  • Reviewing their provider networks
  • Identifying participants at risk of disruption
  • Navigating uncertainty where providers are unregistered or mid-registration.

The reality is:

  • Not all providers will be registered in time
  • Some may exit SIL altogether
  • Participants could face unplanned transitions if action isn’t taken early.

This creates a clear responsibility and opportunity for proactive planning.

What should you be doing now?

While every participant’s situation is different, there are a few practical steps worth considering:

    1. Check registration status

Use the NDIS Commission provider register to confirm whether current providers you’re working with are already registered or in progress.

    2. Identify participants at risk

Review your caseload and flag any participants currently supported by unregistered SIL providers.

    3. Assess continuity risks and plan for continuity

Consider what could happen if a provider is unable to deliver services beyond 1 July 2026. Even if a provider intends to register, there’s no guarantee of approval—early contingency planning can help minimise disruption.

    4. Keep communication open

Engage participants, families, and providers early to support informed decision-making.
